Born on September 10, 1947, in Norwich, Connecticut, Leon spent his early years cultivating a strong work ethic and a deep sense of community that would define his life. He attended Norwich Regional Technical School, graduating from the Electrical Department, and later earned an Associate degree in Business Administration from Manchester Community College.
Family was at the heart of everything Leon did. He is survived by his beloved wife Maria Abad Zahaba; daughter Jennifer and Ryan Dauphin; daughter-in-law Tawnya Zahaba; grandchildren Kaden, Austin, Zoe, and Ryan Jr.; brothers Chester Zahaba and Donald Zahaba along with Donald’s wife Kelly; nieces Jordan Zahaba, Kendra Sackash, and Kristen Yoquelet; and sister-in-law Diane Parsons. His Polish sister in law Regina Fetera. He was predeceased by his parents Leon and Florence (Germain) Zahaba and his beloved son Brian Zahaba.
Leon began his professional career with Southern New England Telephone Company in 1972 as a telephone installer and repairman. His dedication and leadership skills quickly became evident; after five and a half years, he transitioned into the Human Resources department as an Employment Representative. Two years later, he was promoted to Employment Office Supervisor. Over the years, Leon held various management positions within the company until his retirement in 2008. Retirement did not slow him down; he went on to manage a tax office for H&R Block Advisors for another ten years.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Leon was deeply committed to service through the Order of Elks. A devoted member of the Manchester Lodge, he served as Exalted Ruler twice during his tenure. His leadership extended to the Connecticut State Elks Association where he held numerous roles including State Ritual Chairman, Lodge Activities Chairman, Inner Guard, Vice President of the East District, and ultimately President in 1989. His dedication was further recognized when he was appointed District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for Connecticut East. Leon also contributed at the national level by serving on the Grand Lodge Americanism Committee for Area 1 and held positions such as President of the State Past Exalted Rulers Association and Chairman of the Area 1 Elks Interstate Relations Committee.
Leon proudly served his country as a member of the Army National Guard for six years. His faith was an important part of his life; he was a devoted Catholic who found strength and guidance through his beliefs.
Leon’s passions extended beyond work and service organizations. He loved golfing whenever he could find time on the green. Camping trips brought him joy and relaxation alongside family and friends. A loyal fan of the New York Yankees, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. Watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports filled him with immense pride. Reading provided him with endless enjoyment throughout his life.
