Mary Bongiovanni

Mary Bongiovanni, 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 18, 2015 with her beloved son Joseph and goddaughter Roxanne McGarty at her bedside at Venice Hospital in Venice, Florida after a brief illness. Mary was born on August 8, 1926 in New Britain, Connecticut to the late Nicolo and Gaetana Messina. Mary was a resident of New Britain before moving to North Port, Florida in 2010.

Mary attended New Britain High School and later began a career as a secretary for Central Connecticut State University which she also retired from. She was a member of South Church in New Britain where she also taught Sunday school. She considered this one of her greatest achievements as it was something she dearly loved. Mary was a member of the New Britain VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Frank Bongiovanni , two daughters, Janice and Judy Bongiovanni and her brothers Angelo, Joseph, and James Messina. In addition to her son Joseph of New Britain and her granddaughter, Roxanne, she is survived by one grandson, Sean of Hayward, CA as well as several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be on Friday, February 27, 2015 at 10:00am at South Congregational Church at 90 Main St., New Britain. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday, February 26, 2015 from 4:00-7:00pm at New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain. Directions, exit 37 off I-84 take a right at the exit, funeral home is 1 ½ miles on your right.
