Mykola Stepanec, of New Britain, CT, was surrounded by family when he passed away Wednesday, August 24th, following a short illness. Mykola was born in Kiev, Ukraine, December 1, 1932, he came to New Britain with his parents Alexander and Polina Stepanec in 1955 where he worked and retired from Fafnir/Ingersoll Rand after 38 years of service.
He leaves behind his sweetheart, Genevieve (Tylka), whom he married 56 years ago; children Lucy Sokolsky and husband Orest, Thomas Stepanec and wife Jane, and Elizabeth Marcello and husband John; grandsons Alexander Sokolsky, Timothy Stepanec with Kirstina, Christopher Marcello and wife Alina, and Andrew Marcello, and his newest love, great-grandaughter Faith.
Mykola had 'zoloti ruky' and was able to fix anything and everything. He was a devoted family man and helped raise his grandsons and ran 'Didi's' taxi service whenever anyone needed him. He loved working with his wife in the garden and especially tending to his roses, traveling the world and taking pictures. He was a quiet but powerful source of strength to his family. He was also dedicated to his church, St Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church, helping with the building of the church, various festivals and more recently helping to make pyrohy.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 27th at 8:30 from New Britain Memorial Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave, to St Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church at 9:30 for a Funeral Mass and burial at St Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 5 pm to 8 pm with a Panachyda service at 7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to support St Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church.
