Patrick J. Delahunty “PJ”, age 69, beloved widower of Judy Delahunty since 1994, of Naples, FL passed away peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family on November 27th at Massachusetts General Hospital.
PJ was born February 10, 1946 in Hartford to the late Patrick J. and Irene (Costello) Delahunty.
He was a graduate of St. Anthony’s High School in Bristol and Central Connecticut State University. Upon graduation, PJ began a career in politics and state government, during Governor Meskill’s administration. He was the Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut Housing Authority overseeing the building of elderly housing for the state. He later rejoined the family business, PJ Delahunty Inc., which his father founded in 1938. As a long time building contractor in Southington, PJ built many custom homes around central Connecticut and was involved in the historic renovation of several churches. After being with the family business for many years, he later returned to his love for politics by serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Public Works. He was a former president of the Southington Lions Club, a lifelong member of the Elks Club and a member of Shuttle Meadow Country Club. In his earlier days, he enjoyed skiing on the slopes of Stratton Mountain and was an active member of both the national volunteer and professional ski patrol. PJ was such a strong presence in his family, his business, and his community. He was a gregarious, loving, and full of life man who made everyone feel special. When he wasn’t spending time with his cherished grandchildren, he enjoyed the company of his dear friends, golfing, fishing, and summer vacations on Block Island with plenty of Jimmy Buffett music.
He will be dearly missed by his son Patrick and his wife Ashley of Wellesley, MA, his daughter Shannon and her husband Kevin of Natick, MA, his step-son D.J. and his wife Marissa of Fairfield, and his step-son Brian and his wife Eugenia of Larchmont, NY. Known to his grandchildren as “Poppy,” he lived to bring joy, laughter, and bags of “Lolli-Poppy’s” to his 12 grandchildren: Molly, Meaghan, Tyler, Delaney, Dylan, Eviana, Cooper, Winnie, Libby, Drew, Nicolette, and Patrick V. He also leaves his sister Ginny Cayer and her husband Tom of Southington.
