Raymond Gasperini Sr., of Old Saybrook, passed away on February 16, 2025, at the age of 99. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Marjorie (Bartley) Gasperini—his beloved Marge. Born on November 21, 1925, in New Britain to the late Enrico and Lydia Gasperini, who emigrated from Italy as children, he lived a long, healthy, and vigorous life.
Ray loved to tell stories, always with a twinkle in his eye. Those lucky enough to know him heard tales of growing up in an Italian boarding house run by his grandmother, Vittoria; hunting adventures gone awry with his brother, Harry; a brief stint of competitive boxing in Hartford; enlisting in the U.S. Navy as a radioman on a PT boat in WWII; playing semi-pro football for the New Britain Codys; and mastering the craft of bricklaying and stonemasonry—constructing landmark buildings throughout Connecticut while moonlighting on the side. His passion for hard work was evident in his career and the cherished Old Saybrook home he built and shared with Marge for 47 years.
Ray will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Gail Harel; grandchildren Michael Gasperini, Jami Harel, Rachael White, Brian Harel, and Naomi Murphy; and their families, as well as the many neighbors and friends who experienced his big heart. He was predeceased by his brother, Harry Gasperini, and son, Raymond Gasperini Jr.
Ray will be laid to rest at Saint Mary Cemetery in New Britain on February 21, 2025 at 11:30 am.
