JOHNSON, DCC Scott R. DCC Scott R. Johnson UCGC (Ret.), beloved son of Roy and Sharel Johnson, died Aug. 16, 2017 after a valiant struggle with colorectal cancer. He was born Sept. 25, 1973 in Chicago and remained a Chicagoan till the very end. Scott’s life is marked by service and he distinguished himself by serving his country and his community. In 1998 Scott enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving most notably aboard the USCG Cutter Gallatin (WHEC-721) and the USCG Cutter Reliance (WMEC-615) and achieved the rank of Chief Damage Controlman (E-7) in 2014. His awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal and the Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Further, Scott graduated from Recruit Class 40 of the Connecticut Fire Academy in 2007 and joined the New Britain Fire Department. He served with NBFD Engine Co. 8, NBFD Engine Co. 2 and the NBFD Fleet & Facilities Division. Scott’s life touched many, and his impact is far and wide. Known for his sincere faith in Christ, his sense of humor, his jovial manner and his love of the Chicago Cubs and eggs, Scott left behind many who loved him extending far beyond his immediate family. Scott’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for, supported and loved on Scott for the past two years. Further, the family is incredibly thankful for the love and support from both the New Britain Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard; both organizations have exemplified true faith and allegiance to Scott by transcending their obligations and duties and easing the burden of this loss. Their assistance has been invaluable during this time. Scott is survived by his wife Caroline and three beautiful sons Zackary, Benjamin and Jacob; his mother Sharel Johnson; his brother Lt. Col. Karl “KJ" Johnson USMC (Ret.) and wife Nidia; and his loving nieces Selena and Sara.
Calling hours will be held at New Britain Memorial-Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT on Monday August 21, 2017 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Liturgy Outside Mass will be held on Tuesday August 22, 2017 at 11 am in St Paul Church 461 Alling St, Berlin, CT and friends will gather at 9:30 am at the funeral home. Scott will be laid to rest with his father, SSgt. Roy R. Johnson USMC (Ret.) at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA at a date to be announced.
