Well, Al was truly one of a kind, and will be missed greatly by many. He was my first Little League coach and stood in as a father figure at times. His newspaper column "Ala Carte" was great, and I am lucky to have a copy of the book of those articles. He never failed to add my birthday in his column, as he did for so many of his friends and acquaintances, and that helped hold his fraternity of friends together.

Al's passing leaves us all without "The only Delaware that has helped us all". While sport was his profession his passion was using sport to make differences in the lives of the tens of thousands of athletes, coaches, officials and administrators he so creatively wrote about.
Al's storytelling will live on as those of us who knew him can keep telling them.

AL WAS CLOSE FRIEND OF MAX PEZDIRC, WHO HE CALLED "PERSPIRATION STOCKINGS".  THEY WERE FRENDS IN READING, PA, AND SERVED TOGETHER ON USS "NEVER SAILS" AT BAINRIDGE NAVAL STATION DURING WWII.THEY WERE CLOSER THAN BROTHERS. AL WAS KNOWN AND LOVED BY MAX'S FAMILY AND WAS KNOWN TO THEM AS "THE COMMODOR. OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH HIM, WHEREVER HS IS.  HE WILL BE MISSED.

I did not know Al well but I will be forever impressed with his loyalty and friendship.  I worked at Forwood Manor for 24 years.  While there I met a charming gentleman resident by the name of Izzy Katzman, retired News Journal sportswriter.  Al was his friend. Iizzy did not have much family or many visitors but Al was there for him.  He was a devoted, caring gentleman and a great example of what a friend should be.
Rest in peace Al.  I am sure that you and Izzy will have a great time catching up when he greets you in Heaven.
