In Remembrance of Al Magnatta Al Magnatta, a proud World War II veteran and lifelong servant to his community, passed away on January 22, 2026, a week shy of what would have been his 101st birthday. Al leaves behind a legacy defined by courage, service, and humility.
Al grew up in Congers, New York, where his roots in the community were formed early. As a young man, he answered the call to serve his country during World War II, flying combat missions in Europe as part of the U.S. Army Air Forces. He served as a B-17 aerial gunner with the Eighth Air Force, completing multiple combat missions under extreme danger—an experience that shaped him for the rest of his life. Like many of his generation, he rarely spoke about his service, but those who knew him understood the sacrifice and bravery it required.
After returning home from the war, Al continued his service in a different but equally meaningful way. He devoted decades to fire and emergency service in Rockland County, joining the Congers Fire Department and eventually serving as Fire Chief. His commitment extended well beyond one department, as he later served the county in leadership and coordination roles, helping guide emergency response efforts and support firefighters for generations. His impact on public safety and community preparedness was lasting and widely respected.
In his personal life, Al was married for 77 years to Matilda Christina “Tillie” Magnatta, his partner in family and community life. Tillie passed away on June 30, 2025, and was known for her deep commitment to family, her active participation in community organizations, and her role supporting Al throughout their life together.
Al is survived by his children: Linda (married to Ken Zebrowski), Kathy (married to Patrick Peters), Alfred Jr. (married to Carol), and Jeffrey (married to Luanne).
He was a proud Papa to 16 grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to 24 greatgrandchildren.
Al Magnatta represented the very best of his generation: service before self, duty without complaint, and leadership without ego. He will be remembered not only for what he did, but for how he lived—steadfast, generous, and committed to something larger than himself.
His legacy lives on through his family, his community, and all those whose lives were made safer because he chose to serve.
