Antonio Jose Vela

Antonio Jose Vela of New City, NY, 90 years old, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2020. Tony was born on November 19, 1929 in Ambato, Ecuador to Rosa and Tadeo Vela. He emigrated to the United States in 1953 and married the love of his life, Joan Schoen, in 1956. Tony was a Radiologic Technician who owned Pearl River X-Ray, then Nanuet X-Ray and was a partner in the Nanuet Medical Arts Building. He was very proud to become a citizen of the United States in 1976 and was also a long time member of the Nanuet Rotary Club and the New City Seniors Club III. Tony enjoyed spending time with his large loving family of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid New York Rangers fan but his greatest joys came from his family. He is survived by his wife Joan, his daughter Teresa; his sons Jimmy (Mary Pat), Timmy (Debbie), Tony (Terri), Tommy (Pam) and Joey (Belinda). He is also survived by his grandchildren Christine Galvin (Ray), Nicholas (Michelle Giterman), Jason, Sarah, Allie (Anthony Costanza), Kelly, Alyssa, Joey, John, Megan Doty (Matt), Jessica, Alex, Theo and Carter; and his great grandchildren Brooklyn, Mikey, Nora, and Fiona. Tony was the life of the party and was always quick with a funny joke or a story, He made everyone feel welcome and never hesitated to help someone in need. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and anyone who was lucky enough to meet him.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4-8pm at Higgins Funeral Home in Congers, NY. Mass and funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10am at St. Augustine’s Church, New City, followed by interment at Ascension Cemetery, Saddle River Road, Monsey, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Association (als.org), Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation (home care division) and United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956.
