Dino was born in Tuckahoe, New York to Orazio and Anna Pomponio on October 12, 1937. As a small child during World War Two, he had very deep roots in Fairport, New York. Following the war, the family moved back to Tuckahoe, where he attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Archbishop Stepinac High School, and then Manhattan College, earning a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree in 1964.
He applied his degree as a technical sales engineer, developing and improving various battery systems for government and commercial applications while working for Mallory Batteries, later Duracell Batteries in Tarrytown, NY, then for Panasonic Battery Sales Division in Secaucus, New Jersey.
Dino served three years enlisted in the United States Army, first as a radio operator at Fort Benning Georgia, then as a chaplain’s assistant at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. There, he met the love of his life, Merridy Ann Gerwitz. Dino and Merridy married in the Church of the Assumption in October 1965 eventually settling in New City, NY, and raising six children. He was a devout Catholic, attending daily mass at St. Augustine’s Parish and served as a Knight of Columbus.
Dino was a true New York sports enthusiast, forever rooting for his beloved Yankees, as well as the Rangers, Giants, and Knicks! He was passionately proud of his Italian heritage, being the son and brother of Italian immigrants, yet was a patriotic American. He loved bowling, softball, tennis, cooking, traveling to visit family across the US as well as in Italy. He was always happy to make you something to eat or to lend a hand if you had anything that needed to be fixed, even if you didn’t know it needed to be fixed!
Dino was predeceased by his parents, Orazio and Anna, as well as his brother, Pvt Mario Pomponio, 7th Infantry, 3rd Div. D.S.C, his brother, Rear Admiral Bruno Pomponio, S.C. USN (ret), and his son, Paul C. Pomponio.
