

Donald Blumenfeld, formally of New City, NY and Waretown, NJ passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 27, 2023. He was born on August 31, 1933 to Philip and Mary Blumenfeld in the Bronx. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. During that time, he married the love of his life Bernadette McWade. They shared 57 years of love and laughter until her death in 2011. He was a 42 year member of Ornamental Ironworkers Local 580. He started as a journeyman mechanic but eventually became a trustee and eventually was the Fund Director for the union.
He is survived by his children Michael (Elizabeth) of Bardonia, Donna McLendon (Mike) of Hopewell Junction, Thomas of Fort Pierce, Fl, James (Jeanine) of Ocean Isle Beach, NC., and Robert of New City. Poppy/Pop was also survived by his grandchildren Andrew (Tricia), Shaun (Kim), Kaitlyn (Rob), Lindsay (JJ), Robert (Annmarie), Laura (Everett), T, Caroline and James. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren, John, Aubrey, Connor, Robert, Shea, Michael, Huxley and Bridget, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Bernadette, son-in-law Michael McLendon and grandson Tyler Blumenfeld.
He loved to spend time with family and his many friends, especially with Dorothy DeRonde. He was always prepared for a good laugh. He was an avid Yankees fan, loved old movies and puzzles. He enjoyed his AC trips with Dorothy and Beverly. He was a member of the Haverstraw Elks, the American Legion and Tin Can Sailors. He was an early contributor to the development and growth of the New City Little League. He also took great joy and pride in his ability to help fellow ironworkers through his job as Fund Director especially the retired iron workers whom he affectionately referred to as “his pensioners”.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday August 30 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Higgins Funeral Home in New City NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 30 at 10 AM at St Francis of Assisi Church in West Nyack. Following the service, interment will take place at St Anthony Cemetery, Nanuet NY. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Cancer Research or to St. Christopher’s Inn located in Garrison, NY.
