Doris (Dorie) Jean McMaster, 77, of New City, NY passed away at home on June 20, 2012, with her family by her side. She was born to the late Alexander and Catherine (Cassie) McMaster on February 14, 1935 in Paterson, NJ. Dorie graduated from Central High School in 1954 and attended college at night at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Growing up, she was the youngest and only girl with three older brothers, Billy, Jimmy, and Johnny. She loved to speed skate and would teach others to skate at her local ice skating rink. She worked at her family florist growing up while her brothers fought in World War II. She often talked of her varied work experiences, but she finally ended up in the restaurant business. She owned Doris and later McMaster Restaurant in New York City. She loved to tell stories about her life in the city, with celebrities and professional sports stars regularly sitting at her bar or dining at her restaurants. She later moved to New City and owned Bones, A Matter of Taste, and Simon Says respectively, all on Main Street, New City before retiring. Through being a business owner, she was actively involved and served as president of the New City Chamber of Commerce. As she retired and had more free time, she worked tirelessly on causes close to her heart, which was always to help children and her community. She became an active member of Downtown New City, New City Rotary, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland, and the Clarkstown Education Foundation. She would always be the first one to offer help to anyone who needed it, whether with a monetary donation or her time. Those fortunate enough to have known her know that she had a huge heart. She was also always honest. She told it like it was, and often said, "If you don't want to know, don't ask me." With Dorie, you always knew where you stood, and if you ever needed a friend, she would be the one that you knew you could always count on.
Dorie is survived by her son, Simon McMaster Tung; a daughter-in-law, Mae Doo Tung; and her three grandchildren, Patrick Tung, Katie Tung, and Danten McMaster Tung, whom she doted on. She is also survived by her brother, Jimmy McMaster of Totowa, NJ; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy and Johnny; and her son, Danny McMaster Tung.
The wake will be held on Sunday, June 24 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM with a service on Monday, June 25 at 11 AM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main St., New City. Burial will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland or the Clarkstown Education Foundation.
