Edward Nicholas Cluess

On January 10, 2019 the world lost one of the greatest generation. Edward Nicholas (Nick) Cluess was born November 29, 1928 in Greenwich Village, NYC, where he grew up a rough and tumble kid. He was the fifth of eight children born to Henry and Christina Cluess. Nick is predeceased by siblings Anna, Henry, Angelo, and Theresa and survived by his siblings Mildred, Mary and Helen. Nick was educated in NYC public schools and earned his degree from the school of hard knocks on the streets of NYC. He worked his way up from shopping bag salesman at the age of 6, to an NYPD Lieutenant, the position he retired from in 1976. Nick felt a calling to serve his country during WWII and joined the Navy 3 months before his 17th birthday. Nick spent most of his leisure time as a carpenter and used his carpentry skills to build his family a beautiful summer home in Cranberry Lake, NJ., where he spent the last 40 years of his life. Nick was also an amateur harmonica player and enjoyed singing and dancing with his wife of 67 years, Marilyn (nee McAdam). Nick and Marilyn moved to Piermont in the early 1960s where they spent 20 years of their lives raising their family and making friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Nick is survived by his wife of 67 years Marilyn and his children Christine Grilli (Bob), Margaret DeLorenzo (Phil), Nicholas Cluess, and Lynn Manzione (Gregg). He is survived by his 10 grandchildren Angelica Ruta (Tino), Francesca Levine (Jordan), Kimberly DeLorenzo, Anthony DeLorenzo, James Manzione, April Cluess, Jesse Manzione, John DeLorenzo, Christopher Cluess and Alexandra Grilli and 5 great grandchildren Liliana, Natalia and Peter Ruta, and Jackson and Brodie Levine. Nick is also survived by numerous sisters and brothers in law, nieces, nephews and friends too many to count, all who held a very special place in his heart.

For those wishing to make a donation in Nick's honor the family has recommended the American Heart Association. https://www.heart.org

I have a video I took of my dad about 4 years ago, before he became ill. I asked him what the most important thing in life is. He answered easily and quickly.
Family. Especially the children.
