Mrs. Elsie Chappo passed away on the morning of May 1, 2025, at the age of 97. She was the daughter of Lina and Kurt Schott, who immigrated to the United States from Germany shortly after World War I. Through hard work and perseverance, they built a life from humble beginnings, eventually owning a bakery and supporting their daughter’s education.
Elsie went on to earn her master’s degree from Columbia University and dedicated 20 years of her life to teaching elementary school at George Miller Elementary School in Nanuet. She married Eugene Chappo (fondly known as Gene Chappo), and together they shared a deeply loving and inseparable bond. Their life was filled with travel and, in their later years, they especially enjoyed going on cruises.
An avid athlete, Elsie found joy in skiing, tennis, golf, horseback riding and swimming. After Gene’s passing in June of 2013, she deeply felt his absence but continued to carry his memory with her.
Elsie is survived by her children, Richard Chappo and Karen Profenna; her grandchildren, Stephanie Profenna, Nicole Profenna, Andrew Chappo, and Jacqueline Chappo; and her great-grandchildren, Jack and Skyler. She will be fondly remembered for her cheerful spirit and the unwavering love and support she gave to her family.
