Eric Stuart Calyo

Eric Stuart Calyo of Spring Valley, NY, 81 years old, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Deborah and his daughter and son-in-law, Adeena & John. He is also survived by six grandchildren (Jalen, Aydin, Jacob, Aaron, Jamir and Amias).

He cherished his time spent with his wife on their countless travels as well as with friends & family, especially with his grandchildren who have all made him very proud.

Eric was born in the Bronx, NY to Stanley and Mildred Calyo on June 12, 1945. Eric married his wife, Deborah, on December 26, 1970. They met while working for the NYC Board of Education, doing what they loved most, teaching students. Eric taught for over 30 years, to gifted & talented students at Mott Hall P.S./I.S. 223 in Manhattan, NY. He was a phenomenal math teacher and had the ability to make lifetime connections with his students. Many of them remained in contact with him beyond their grade school experience. He was genuinely proud of all their achievements in school and in life. Teaching was his passion and he thoroughly enjoyed being with his students. Eric had a special ability to teach math in a way that made it easy and enjoyable. He also loved to make his students laugh.

Beyond teaching, Eric loved traveling and exploring new places. He would engross himself in the culture of wherever he was to appreciate the place he was visiting. He loved movies, going out to eat, going to the gym, and most of all, he adored going to his favorite restaurant, Lulu’s in West Nyack.

Eric will be dearly missed by his wife and daughter, as he was truly an amazing husband and father, as well as his friends and family who knew him.

Sitting hours will be held on Wednesday August 26 from 10:30 AM-12:30PM at Higgins Funeral Home at 321 South Main Street, New City, NY. Burial will be immediately afterward at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, NJ.
