With gratitude for a life rooted in compassion, we honor Hector Manuel Quiles—a beloved son, brother, and father. His gentle spirit and unwavering commitment to doing good defined his journey, despite life’s challenges. He embraced his role with humility—as a soldier, craftsman, and caring soul.
Born on May 29, 1942, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Hector was the third of four children raised by a devoted single mother after the family’s move to New York. In 1961, he married and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving at Walson Army Hospital, Ft. Dix, NJ. He earned an honorable discharge three years later, having reached the rank of Specialist (SP4).
Though diagnosed with schizophrenia in his twenties, Hector faced life with courage. His love for his daughter Lianna, though complicated by illness, remained deep and sincere. He found meaningful work as a flooring carpenter; he loved music and was a good dance partner. In his later years, lived peacefully in assisted care where his quiet kindness continued to shine.
Hector is survived by his daughter Leeana and his sisters Aida and Evelyn. To those who knew him, Hector was a quiet presence—reminding us that dignity exists in resilience and that compassion does not always need words.
Though not widely known, his legacy is felt in the patient care he received and the lives he touched with simplicity and sincerity. “Even in silence, love endures.”
A private memorial will be held, with no public viewing. Tributes and arrangements may be directed at Michael Higgins Funeral, New City, NY.
The family offers heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers who walked alongside Hector in his later years. Your kindness was his comfort and peace.
In remembering Hector, may we be inspired to notice the gentle ones—those who live quietly, love deeply, and teach us the strength of grace.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” —Psalm 34:18
Rest in peace, Hector. Your life was a quiet blessing.
