James Alphonzo Mason III of New City, N.Y.,passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, with his loving family at his side, on August 3, 2025. He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut to James and Lethonia, who preceded him in death. He was 77 years old. Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted partner of 33 years, Frances Turro of New City, N.Y.; his sons James Antonio (Melissa) of Norwalk, Connecticut, and Aaron (Kelli) of Wichita, Kansas; along with his five granddaughters (Tianna (Chris), Sierra, Mikayla, Alanna (Jacob) and Cheyenne) and his seven great grandchildren. He had a special relationship with Tianna with whom he had many lengthy, happy conversations.
He is also survived by his sisters Anne Holmes (Edward), JaneDora (Bancroft), Janice (Drew), and his brother Raymond (Rebecca) along with his many nieces and nephews.
Family, singing and music, long walks, the N.Y. Yankees and Giants, traveling and going to the movies were some of his favorite pastimes. He always had a big, beautiful smile on his face, a kind word for all and would lift everyone’s spirits by breaking into song at a moment’s notice (often making up the words as he sang!! ) He never really said good-bye, but always ended his conversations with “Ciao”! His love, his spirit, his kindness and elegance will never be forgotten and will always be treasured.
Memorial Visitation will take place on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Michael J Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main St., New City from 2-5p.m.
