She graduated from Nyack High School, Class of 1950, and attended Rockland Community College.She was the loving wife of Edward J. Fitzgerald, whom she married in 1952, and who predeceased her in 1978. Their second son, Scott, died shortly after his birth in 1954. Her son Edward III died in 2016. Before her marriage, she was a model for William Zeller in Nanuet, as well as working at the Coleman Studios in New York. She also was stenographer at Rockland Psychiatric in Orangeburg.
Joan was an active life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Congers Fire Company for over 50 years, having served as President and Secretary several times. She was also an active riding member of the Congers Valley Cottage Ambulance Corps in the late 60's and early 70's, as well as their Training Officer and Dispatcher. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked as such at Nyack Hospital, she also held secretarial positions, and was a Medical Transcriptionist at Nyack Hospital. Joan was a secretary in her son Kevin’s insurance investigation business in White Plains, until her retirement in 1996. Joan was an active member of the Nanuet II Senior Citizen Club and had served as Secretary and Entertainment Chairperson. She loved to travel, and her other hobbies included knitting, crocheting, ceramics and reading.
Joan is survived by her loving children (wife of Edward III) Pamela of Hammonton NJ, Kevin and his wife, Amber of South Salem NY, Timothy of South Fallsburg, NY, James and his wife, Zhanat of New City, NY, John and his wife, Linda of Nanuet NY, Kathleen and her husband Peter Pincott of Cornwall on Hudson, NY, Eileen and her husband Randy Marczan of Highland Falls NY, and as her twelve grandchildren, Jessica, Cristen, Cailin, Amanda, Kimberly, Jamie Lee Coerts, Ayden Coerts, Bridget, Thomas, Alana,
Randy Jr., and Maiya, three step grandchildren, James Pincott and his wife Christine, Danny, and Tim, and several great grandchildren. She was fortunate in her later years to have had the loving companionship of her wonderful best friend, Colm Bowden of New City NY.
Joan’s family will receive friends at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home at 321 So. Main Street, New City NY,Monday, January 30th, 2023 from 3:00PM-7:00PM. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul’s Church in Congers, NY at 10:00AM, on Tuesday, January 31st, 2023. Joan will be buried in the Onderdonk Veterans Cemetery, in Suffern NY.
