

New City - Joan Lockwood (nee Meehan) passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 5, 2020, after an extended illness. Joan was born in East Orange, NJ on August 24th, 1930 and recently celebrated her 90th birthday; she attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ and Rockland Community College. Joan was a 62 year resident of New City where she and her loving and devoted husband, Bob, raised their four children. Joan was a lifelong communicant and was active in her church and community. Joan was a member of the Altar Society and Catholic Big Sisters of St. Augustine Parish, where she also taught CCD religious education. She avidly supported her children in their youth as an active member of the PTA, New City Little League, Cub Scouts, and 4-H Club. Joan and Bob met at the Jersey Shore and vacationed there annually. Joan was an excellent cook and also enjoyed traveling with her husband.
Joan's love and devotion centered around her family. Joan was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Helen Meehan, as well as sisters Grace Claire Meehan and Patricia Connell, brother-in-law Joseph Lockwood, sister-in-law Grace Corbalis and brother-in-law Joseph Corbalis. In addition to her loving husband of 67 years, Bob, she is survived by her adoring children Robert Jr. (Mary), Patti (John Torkildsen), Bryan (Daisy) and Timothy. Joan is also survived by her brothers Joseph Meehan II (Diane) and Daniel Meehan (June), sister-in-law Dolores Lockwood, brother-in-law James Connell, as well as many nieces and nephews. The pride and joy of her life were her six grandchildren John and James (Torkildsen), Matthew, Kevin, Michael and Christopher, as well as her two great-grandchildren Brynn and Cole. They all loved her immensely and will treasure their memories of her. Joan will also be missed by her many good friends and neighbors.
Joan enjoyed a fulfilling 21 year career as a Resource / Special Education Teacher at Felix Festa Junior High School in the Clarkstown School District. She had a very positive influence on her many students.
Visitation will be Friday, September 11th at the Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 S Main St., New City, NY. 2:00-6:00 pm. Funeral services will be on Saturday, September 12th, at 9:45 am at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in New City, NY. Interment will be private.
