John Akasalayil of Pomona NY, 68 years old, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2018. He was born on September 29, 1949 to Chummar and Mariam Akasalayil in Kerala India. He graduated with a Masters degree from Punjab University in India and worked for the Indian Government in New Delhi before moving to the United States in 1979. He was a hard working entrepreneur who started and operated a successful business for over 30 years in the local community and was known to be one of the key architects that laid the foundations for organizing the Indian Knanaya Catholic Community in North America. John enjoyed traveling, and spending time with friends but his greatest joys came from his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elsie, his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Tintu and his grandson, Jonah. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Pennamma and Chacko Kalapurayil, brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Lizy Akasalayil, sister and brother-in-law Lovelyn and James Myalkarapurath, sister and brother-in-law Joselyn and Sunny Koithara as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved son Jeffrey. He will be missed by all who knew him.
The wake is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18th from 5:30pm-9pm at the Knanaya Community Center in Stony Point, NY. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday April 19th, 10am, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Nanuet, followed by interment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
