

John Steve Livanos of Thiells, NY died on September 17, 2024 at Nyack Hospital surrounded by his family in his final days, due to complications related to his 2.5 year battle with a form of bone cancer. He was born on September 10, 1943 and raised in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn, NY to Steve and Victoria Livanos. At 17, he joined the US Army Reserves and was stationed in Panama during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Upon his return, he attended Pratt Institute pursuing a degree in Architecture and Engineering.
He was a member of Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church in Brooklyn, where he met his beautiful wife Josette at a church dance. They married two years later and moved to the NY suburban town of Thiells where he became an active member of the community. He was a volunteer for the Thiells Fire Department as part of the search and rescue diving team. He was a parishioner at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in West Nyack, NY for 55 years and an active member of the Ahepa. John worked for the movie industry as a projectionist, where he developed a love of movies. Eventually he found himself traveling worldwide as a Sound and Projection Engineer for newly built multiplex theaters. He loved showcasing the movies Top Gun, Star Wars and Jurassic Park on his home entertainment system before home theaters became popular.
After retirement, John and his wife travelled all around the world before becoming snowbirds in Naples, FL. John was an avid model train collector ever since he was young boy, leading him to become a member of the Hillsdale Train Club in NJ and the Naples Train Club in FL where he was able to share his joy of playing trains with like-minded friends.
John was a very kind-hearted and compassionate man that helped anyone who needed him. He is survived by his loving wife, Josette, and his daughters Tina (husband Jim) and Stefanie (husband Dave), precious granddaughter Christina, and step-grandsons Christopher and Andrew, sister Anna and her children Billy, Steven and Fay and their families. His family and friends will miss him deeply.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, September 20, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service Inc., 321 South Main Street, New City, NY 10956. A funeral mass will occur Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1 Marycrest Rd, West Nyack, NY 10994. A burial will occur Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Tappan Reformed Church Cemetery, 32 Old Tappan Rd, Tappan, NY 10983.
