John R. Schmid of West Nyack, NY passed away from pancreatic cancer at Holy Name Medical Center under the care of Villa Marie Claire Hospice in Teaneck, NJ. John was born on November 8, 1945 in Neptune, NJ. He was raised in Shark River Hills, NJ and attended St. Rose High School in Belmar, NJ and graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1967. In September 1967 he joined the United States Army and served in Vietnam from1968-1969. Upon returning from Vietnam, he met Ann Gerlach and they married on September 24, 1971. Surviving are his loving wife of 49 years, Ann (Gerlach) Schmid of West Nyack, NY; Five children: daughter Lisa Lagatol of Paramus, NJ; son John and (Stephanie) Schmid of Inver Grove Heights, MN; daughter Jennifer (Schmid) and Eric Hohmann of Morristown, NJ; son Michael and (Lori) Schmid of West Nyack, NY; son Christopher Schmid and his fiancé Allison Aprile of Valley Cottage, NY. He was preceded in death by a daughter Ann Kaufman; and his two parents Russell Schmid and Catherine Schmid. He is also survived by two siblings: Mary Schmid of Wall, NJ; Cathy and Barry Nestor of Tampa, Florida; five grandchildren Ella and Logan Schmid of Inver Grove Heights, MN; Katie, Kristen, and Michael Schmid of West Nyack, NY and many nieces and nephews.
John started his career as an accountant for Gannett Newspapers in West Nyack, NY and retired from the position of CFO for the Birmingham News, Birmingham, Alabama in 2010. After retiring he worked part time for H&R Block in Nanuet, NY. He loved spending time with his family, watching Yankees baseball games and Villanova basketball games, and also enjoyed trips out to Minnesota and traveling. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 15 at 10:00 am at St. Anthony Shrine Church in Nanuet, NY. Burial will be at a later date.
