Joseph George Cavanagh of New City, NY passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. Born on March 31, 1935 in Manhattan, NY, Joseph proudly served his country with honor in the US Army. He retired from the NYPD after 22 years. He also worked at Clarkstown South HS for many years. He was past Grand Knight of the John Cardinal McCloskey Knights of Columbus and a proud member of the American Legion Post 1682 in New City, NY.
Joseph was married to the love of his life Bernadette (nee Clark) for 54 years. He is survived by his six loving daughters, JoAnn & Peter Michealsen, Maureen & John Ferguson, Deirdre & John LaNave, Eileen Cavanagh, Tara & Bob King, and Bernadette & Scott Frae. He was the proud Pop of his thirteen grandchildren, Joseph, JT, Ryan, Shannon, Danielle, Megan, Jack, Scott, Kate, Channel, Kevin, Clarissa, and Nicole. He is predeceased by his mother and father Anna & George Cavanagh. He is also survived by his loving sister Patricia Cullen and her husband Bernard and many nieces and nephews. We wanted to thank all Joe’s lifelong friends who were always there for him and his family.
The family will be accepting visitors at Higgins Funeral Home on Thursday October 18 from 2-5pm and from 7-9pm. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 11am on Friday October 19 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, West Nyack, NY. Burial to follow at Fredrick Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Brick Church Road, Spring Valley, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joseph’s name to St. Paul’s Mission, PO Box 40, Hayes, Montana 59527.
