Julia Rose Mullin was born February 1, 1947, to Julia Massey & Oscar Magnus. Julie was the light of her parents’ lives; their abiding love for her was the foundation for the love she would shower on family and friends throughout her life.
Julie attended Gerard Elementary School in Manhattan and continued at Sacred Heart of Mary High School. Her love of education led her to Dominican College, where she was joined by just 12 women working towards their bachelor's degrees in education.
In the fall of 1964, while a student at Dominican, the bad luck of a flat tire led Julie to providential meeting with Michael Charles Mullin. After months of Julie driving out of her way to visit the gas station where he worked, Mike finally got over his nerves and asked out the beautiful girl in the Pontiac. She said yes and the two never looked back, marrying on April 6, 1968. Amid the joys of that year was the profound sorrow of Julie losing both her parents within months of each other. Though heartbroken, Julie never lost her positive outlook or her sharp sense of humor.
Following her graduation from Dominican Julie began her teaching career with the East Ramapo School District. Though she derived much joy from her career and was a phenomenal teacher, she retired in 1974 to begin her most cherished and fulfilling job, Mom to Michael John.
Julie, Mike, and Michael had many fine adventures together, often with their beloved Aunt Rose. From day trips to the Shore, to weekend getaways to the Rose Bowl Parade and beyond, to far off destinations requiring a passport – including an Atlantic crossing with her beloved cousin Jo-Ann – no exploration was too big or too small for Julie.
Trips continued as Julie’s family grew and they welcomed Vickie, their treasured daughter-in-law, with Michael’s bowling career taking the family all over the world. In 2009, the birth of Julie’s grandson Conor brought her immeasurable joy: she loved taking him to modeling and acting auditions and to museums and spending time with him in the family’s Happy Place of Hawaii. When she was not traveling, you could find Julie at bowling matches, baseball games, and fundraisers, always ready to cheer on her boys and support their activities.
Her large extended family also benefited from her care and her ability to know each person as an individual. If you lost a tooth, gained a grandchild, celebrated an anniversary, had another birthday: Julie remembered you with a note and a card. She kept in touch with friends far and wide, those from the Bronx, from her teaching days, and from Rockland County. Her warm smile will be remembered by many.
In addition to her cherished husband Mike, beloved son Michael and his wife Vickie, and treasured grandson Conor, Julie is survived by her sister-in-law Joan Goldberg and family, brother-in-law Dennis Mullin and family, as well as many Heilferty, Massey, and Verrier cousins, nieces, and nephews both local and around the world.
Julie’s life will be celebrated in a Mass of Christian Burial Monday on January 22, 2024 at 11 am at St. Catharine of Alexandria, 523 Western Hwy South, Blauvelt, NY 10913. Family and friends are invited to visit Sunday 4-8 pm, Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service 321 S Main Street New City, NY 10956. In lieu of flowers donations to the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine.
