Kathleen Mary Corcoran

Play Tribute Movie

Kathleen (Kit) Corcoran (nee McCormack) of Nanuet, NY, 95 years young, has peacefully passed away after a long fulfilling life. Kathleen was born to Thomas and Amy McCormack in Drummin, Ballinagare, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. Kit trained as a nurse & midwife in England & later returned to Roscommon Hospital as an operating room nurse. Later, Kathleen married Martin & immigrated to Brooklyn, NY to start a family, never loosening her Irish roots or losing her accent. After her daughters were born, Kit continued to practice nursing in NY & earned her BSN from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, eventually retiring as an Assistant Director of Nursing at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Staten Island. A frequent host to her Irish guests, Kathleen was an honest & loyal friend to many, a talented seamstress & baked delicious apple pies but her greatest joy came from her family. Kit is survived by her daughter Sheila Corcoran (Paul Schofield) of New City NY & her daughter Amy Corcoran-Drogalis (Stephen) of Stewart Manor NY. Kathleen is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Kathleen, Amy, & John Schofield & Maeve & Conor Drogalis, in addition to many treasured nieces & nephews. Kit was predeceased by her loving husband Martin & her siblings: Eileen & Mick (Ireland), Tom (Scotland) & Pat (England). Kathleen will be greatly missed by all who were lucky to know her. Family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 15 from 3-7pm at Higgins Funeral Home in New City NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16 11:30am at St. Anthony’s Shrine Church, Nanuet, NY. Internment will follow at a later date in her homeplace of Roscommon, Ireland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Charities of NY or United Hospice of Rockland. Please plant a tree or bake an apple pie in her honor.

My deepest condolences to Sheila, Amy and to all Kit’s close knit family and her many friends. Kit was central to my young life and had a big influence on my attitudes and beliefs. She had a great warmth, steadiness and generosity. Her visits home to Roscommon were always a great joy. We missed these in recent times and it’s sad that we now look forward to her final journey home. May she rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

Deepest sympathy to Sheila and Amy on the death of your wonderful mother Kit. She was a very close friend of the Keenan family, my godmother and a colleague of my late father in Roscommon hospital. We have great memories of her visits home when she always called to our home and indeed my parents always enjoyed visiting herself and Martin on their many trips to New York. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Brian and Ethel Keenan

Back in 1985 I & a friend flew to JFK for the first time and was met by the lovely, friendly Kit McCormack, who brought us to her beautifull home & let us stay there for a few nights. She was one in a million, she said it as she saw it. Sheila, Amy & extended relatives! You were blessed to have been part of such a wonderful lady Kit as your Mum, granmother, Auntie, Godmother - May She Rest In Peace
Amen
