Kenneth D. Bucalo of New City, NY, born on Dec 11th 1928, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov 23rd at the age of 89. He is now reunited with his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen McKessy Bucalo. Ken is survived by his children, Dean, Stacey, Joanne and Keith and his grandchildren Jade “Buttercup”, Emmett and Wyatt “The Superstars”. The only thing he loved more than being a police officer was his family.
Ken was born in the Bronx, NY. He proudly served his country in the Korean War where he was awarded a Bronze Star. He continued his service when he became a US postal carrier and then a New York City Transit Police Officer, where he reached the rank of Sergeant. After Ken retired, he worked for the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy in the transport division. In his free time, Ken enjoyed volunteering at St. Augustine’s CYO baseball program and New City Babe Ruth baseball league.
Ken was a voracious reader, making weekly trips to the New City Library. He enjoyed attending the Nanuet Seniors Club, driving, walking and drinking large amounts of black coffee. Ken was adventurous picking up skiing and roller blading in his 50s and 60s. He loved hockey and had an affinity for old time movies and actors.
Ken enjoyed life and always had a smile on his face. He made himself laugh, sometimes at the expense of others and he never complained. He’d often say “some days are diamonds, some days are coal.”
Kenneth was preceded by his wife Mary Ellen McKessy, and his bothers Andrew, Bernard and sister, Gloria Scores who often referred to him as “Angel”. Ken has now become an angel to his entire family.
Services will be held on November 27th at Higgin Funeral Home in New City, NY between the hours of 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday the 28th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please give to your favorite charity this holiday season.
