Mary Cabrini Hughes

Mary Cabrini Leahy Hughes of New City, NY, 83 years old, ascended into heaven peacefully surrounded by family on January 31, 2025. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Matthew J Hughes, her daughter Kathleen Hughes-Salvatorelli and son in-law Louis Salvatorelli.

Mary graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan, New York. She went on to Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, New York, where she received her degree in education. Later in life she pursued her masters in special education at Lehman College in the Bronx, New York. She often reminisced about her days at the Mount so much, that she brought her family back to visit the beautiful campus often.

Mary was born in Yonkers, NY to Edward and Mary Leahy on March 16, 1941. In 1961 she was introduced to Matthew Hughes and immediately fell in love. They were married on June 27, 1964 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Yonkers, New York. Mary was the backbone of the family and, that was her greatest love.

Her most cherished times were spent with family watching her beloved NY Yankees.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday, February 6, at 11:15 AM at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church at 118 South Main Street in New City, New York.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
