With profound sadness we announce the passing of Mary Bernadette Jackson, our loving and devoted wife, mother and friend to all whose lives she touched. Mary passed away peacefully at Sunrise of New City on April, 16, 2019 at the age of 79.
Friends and loved ones are invited to the Higgins Funeral home 321 S. Main Street, New City, NY, from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm, for visitation on Thursday April 18, 2019. A Blessing will be held at 11:30am on Friday April 19, 2019 at Saint Augustine’s Church, 114 S. Main Street, New City, after which she will be interred at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
Mary, also known as Berni to family and friends, was born on October 21, 1939 in Manhattan, NY, to James and Rose (Farrell) Campbell. She grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, and was a 1957 graduate of Sacred Heart High School.
Mary met her love and soulmate Tom at age 16. They were married on July 12, 1959, and were to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this summer. In 1964 they moved to Rockland County and settled in New City where Mary devoted herself to raising their three children.
Mary later went on to earn a degree from Rockland Community College, and after graduation, worked for several years in a local law practice.
Mary and Tom fell in love with Long Beach Island, NJ, and for the last 30 years have spent much of their time from April through October there. They joined the Beach Haven Park Yacht Club, developed friendships, and opened their hearts and home to friends, children and grandchildren.
Mary was Catholic and attended church weekly at Saint Augustine’s in New City and Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Long Beach Island. She had many interests: was an avid reader, was proud of her Irish heritage, loved opera, and to debate politics.
Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Thomas Richard Jackson; her children Thomas Jackson/Pamela, Kathleen Ascher and Patricia Jackson; her grandchildren Natalie Jackson, Jessica Ascher and Benjamin Ascher; her sister Patricia Joyce, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was predeceased by her parents, and brothers James and Robert Campbell.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to United Hospice of Rockland www.hospiceofrockland.org
