Michael Joseph “Joe” Shine of New city was called to Heaven, peacefully, on Thursday, June 26, 2025. He was born on March 18, 1939, in the Bronx, New York, to parents Thomas and Mary Shine “nee Griffin”, both of Ireland. Joe grew up in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx where he went to Holy Family grammar school and graduated from St. Helena’s.
Joe married the love of his life, Eileen Williamson(Gaga), in 1960, whom he met at Rockaway Beach, Queens. They initially settled in the Inwood section of Manhattan and the Bronx before moving their family of four boys to New City, NY in 1973.
Pop began working in construction as a “Tin-Knocker” He loved the job but he always wanted to be better. His brother in law Vinny Lavin got him a job at Colt Industries working in the computer room. He discovered an aptitude for computer programming. Business technology was exploding at this time and he was at the forefront. He worked during the day and attended Pace at night. He earned a degree in Accounting and Information Systems. Through his hard work, knowledge and skill he became the Manager of Information Systems at Bristol Myers. He traveled the world conducting business and becoming ever more successful. After coming home, for a weekend, from Europe to run the NYC marathon and having to return that night Pop decided that he wanted to be home more.
He created his own company and went to work for TIAA-Cref. Like everywhere else he worked he excelled and became an invaluable asset to the Company. As TIAA grew so did his reputation. He was the SME on the company’s record keeping platform and was the main contact person whenever there were any issues. He spent many a late night and weekend to make sure that the billions participants had invested were accounted for correctly. No financial reports were issued without his approval. He retired knowing he was a major contributor to two very successful organizations.
In 1988 he bought a vacation home in Long Beach Island, NJ where he spent many of his day with family as well as teaching his grandchildren how to swim in the ocean and ride their bikes. He always loved the beach especially LBI and after retirement loved to winter down in Jupiter. He and mom would always have a week reserved for their grandchildren and sons and daughter in laws. These are times we will always treasure, and memories will last a lifetime.
Joe was passionate about sports. He loved to run and work out. In the gym by 5 am and ready to take on the day. He loved the Yankees, Giants, Rangers, Notre Dame and playing golf, He was most proud of his hole in one at Doral. He also very proud about his Irish heritage and the Pearl River St. Patrick’s Day Parade and loved to hear the bagpipers. His quick wit and loud laugh will be sorely missed.
Joe is survived by his wife, Eileen and their four sons: Michael and Nancy (Kelly and Jimmy Schneider, Great Granddaughter, Lisa: and Michael); Robert and Deirdre (Luke, Matthew, Ryan and TJ); Thomas and Maureen (Lauren and Jake; Ashley, Joseph, Lily, Bailey; Danny and Ali (Erin and Patrick). In addition, he is survived by his brother Tom. He always had a special place in his heart to be a special uncle to all his nieces and nephews.
Pop was always the first to help family or friends going through a rough time. It was nice to see that help returned when he became ill. Alzheimer’s might have robbed him of his memory and body, but it never took his smile or laughter away. We also wanted to thank his brother-in-law Frank Williamson, for all that he has done for our Mother and Father during this hard time.
Visiting will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY. A mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday July 1, at the Parish of St. Francis of Assisi R.C, Church at 128 Parrott Road, West Nyack, NY.
