Nora (Shanahan) Cahill passed away on November 22, 2020 at the age of 99. Nora was born on November 17, 1921 in Drombane, Thurles County Tipperary Ireland. Nora was born into a large, loving family. She was one of four sisters that emigrated to America. Nora arrived in America on the ship Brittanic on July 9, 1949 at the age of 27. Upon arriving in America, Nora started her career in the garment district as a very talented dressmaker/seamstress. Nora met her husband, John (Johnny) first while asking for directions on the Second Avenue Bus and then a week later at an Irish dance hall. It was love that was meant to be. They made a life for themselves in a neighborhood on the Upper East Side called Yorkville. Nora and John had three children, John Joseph, Marian, and Anne Marie. America became her home and she loved it with all her heart.
Nora moved to Rockland County to be near her daughter Anne, son in law Greg, and her three beautiful grandchildren. She was a fantastic cook who loved to bake and share her exceptional Irish Soda Bread with others. Nora could do anything, often referring to herself as a “Jack of all trades”.
The greatest joy of Nora’s life were her three grandchildren, Connor, Brandon, and Erin Bacalles. She lived 99 years old due to the love of her family and love of life. She was an avid reader and loved to watch any kind of sports, especially tennis.
Nora is predeceased by her husband, John, son, John Joseph, and daughter, Marian.
Nora is survived by her sisters, Philomenia O’Dwyer (Shanahan), Bridget Williams (Shanahan), and brothers Michael Shanahan and Dennis Shanahan. Her daughter, Anne Marie Bacalles (Cahill), son in law Gregory Bacalles, her cherished grandchildren, Connor Bacalles, Brandon Bacalles, and Erin Bacalles, as well as her inlaw and very dear friend, Marie Bacalles. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved.
