Phyllis was born on November 28, 1936 with twin sister Dolores Burr in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1954. Her life’s journey was one of deep faith, driven by an innate desire to follow Jesus Christ. To this end, she joined The Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Newburgh, NY.
During her most spiritual tenure Phyllis studied Catholic doctrine and earned a master’s degree in education and art. It was her heartfelt belief that God willed her to serve His flock as an educator. In 1968, Phyllis left the convent to pursue this vocation.
What started out as a friendship with the Latorre family soon grew familial. She was a loving sister to Dorothy Loffredo, Johanna Thibault, and Joseph Latorre. In addition to her sister Dolores, Phyllis was predeceased by Nunzio (Bud) Latorre, Sara Latorre and Carol Schardt. Over the years she was an aunt to many nieces and nephews. A stalwart of faith, she was the family’s spiritual leader, resident poet, and artist: sharing her time, talents and treasures with all.
Phyllis life of service, through education, spanned 20 years at St. Augustine’s Parochial school in New City, New York. Her life can be characterized as one of art, beauty, and loving generosity. She inspired others to follow Jesus by her kind example. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, 10am, at St. Augustine’s Church, New City, followed by interment at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. Phyllis made contributions to many charities. With that in mind, and in lieu of flowers - please make a contribution to the charity of your choice in her memory.
