

Richard J. McDine, Sr (Dick) of Pearl River, NY, 87 years old passed away peacefully at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence on January 7, 2022. Prior to Pearl River, NY, Richard and his wife, Mary, retired to Sun City, Bluffton, SC for 13 years. Before their retirement, they lived in Congers, Valley Cottage and Yonkers, NY. He was born on November 10, 1934 to Thomas and Gertrude McDine of Yonkers, NY. He graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School of White Plains, NY. While attending Stepinac High School, he played on the Varsity Basketball Team that won the 1951 Catholic School State Championship. He was voted MVP of that tournament. Continuing his love of basketball, he attended both St. John’s University and Iona College on a basketball scholarship. Richard was a member of the United State Army during the Korean War. During his assignment, he played on the Army Basketball Team traveling around to different areas entertaining the troops. After his discharge from the Army, he continued playing basketball in various leagues. While playing in the Vinegar Hill Basketball League in Harlem, NY, he met his soon to be wife, Mary Barry. Richard and Mary got married on January 31, 1959. They lived in Yonkers, NY for a few years where they began their family. After the birth of their fourth child, they moved to the suburbs of Valley Cottage and Congers, NY. Raising 6 children Catholic, they joined St. Paul’s Church in Congers, NY whereby all 6 children attended St. Paul’s Grammar School. Richard was Co-Founder of St. Paul’s CYO Basketball Program. In addition to running the CYO Program, he coached and mentored many children to love the game as much as he did. He would plan Family Basketball Nights that would involve all the St. Paul’s families to join in the game. Richard owned his own Coca Cola distributor for many years in Yonkers, NY. After retiring, he became a Clarkstown bus driver and Mary became a bus monitor. In Richard’s retirement, he perfected his golf game and continued to cheer on his favorite Boston Celtics Basketball Team.
Richard’s wife Mary (Barry) predeceased him in January 2014. He is survived by his son Richard McDine, Jr. (Cathy), and children Jacqueline Sylvester (John Paul), 2 great grandchildren Addison and Charleigh, Richie (Victoria) and 1 great grandchild Kingsley and Casey Harding (Jack). Doreen Otsuka (Larry), and their sons, Larry Thomas (Jess) and Michael Otsuka. Dennis McDine (Suzette) and their son Liam McDine. Mary Kay Gatto (Michael) and their children, Gabriella and Matthew Gatto. Thomas McDine (Donna) and their daughters Nicole and Hayley McDine. Brian McDine (Mariza) and their son Tyler McDine. His companion Addy Ducey whom he has spent that last 7 years enjoying life with.
