

Robert (“Bob”) Houlihan of Suffern, New York, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Bob shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Patricia Houlihan (née Monaghan), the love of his life and devoted partner for 60 years. Together they raised their family in West Nyack, New York, where they were faithful parishioners of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for 38 years.In 1999, Bob and Patricia moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they enjoyed 21 wonderful years filled with warmth, friendship, and community.
Born in September 1935 to Robert and Anna Houlihan, Bob grew up in Jackson Heights, New York. He was predeceased by his cherished wife Patricia, his parents, and his sister, Joan Kerrigan. Bob is survived by his loving brother and sister-in-law Kevin and Patricia Houlihan, his four children: Sean Houlihan; Erin O’Grady (John); Drew Houlihan (Judith); and Moira Newman(Joseph). His greatest joy was his family, especially his seven grandchildren: Brendan O’Grady(Nicole), Megan O’Grady, Conor Houlihan, Kelly Houlihan-Moore (Kayla), Patrick Houlihan, Caitlin Newman, and Brianne Newman. He is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Bob lived his life as a reflection of his deep Christian faith. Guided by compassion, humility, and service to others,he dedicated himself to helping those in need. In 1956, he joined the New York City Police Department, where he served with honor and distinction for 27 years, rising to the rank of Inspector. Following his retirement from the NYPD in 1983 he continued his professional career in the private sector, serving with Chemical Bank and Mastercard International for many years.
Retirement provided Bob with new opportunities to serve others. In Hilton Head, he taught English as a Second Language to individuals seeking a better life, volunteered with Volunteers in Medicine, which provides healthcare to those who cannot afford it, and worked through his parish, St. Francis by the Sea, to assist families facing financial hardship. Bob’s generosity knew no bounds; no one who came to him in need was ever turned away without kindness, encouragement, or help.
Bob will be remembered for his unwavering faith, generous spirit, gentle nature, warm smile, and the genuine care he showed to everyone he met. Above all,he will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, proud Poppy, and loyal friend whose life touched countless others.
Visitation will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main Street, New City, New York, on Thursday, June 4th, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5, at St. Anthony’s Church in Nanuet, followed by interment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
