Sister Bridget Kiniry of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on June 2, 2024 in Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, NY. She was 92 years old.
Born in Johnstown, PA, on June 27, 1931, Bridget was the daughter of James and Margaret Suttmiller Kiniry. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8,1950, and received the name Sister Lawrence. She professed her first vows in 1952 and final vows in 1957.
Sister Bridget received a BS in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, NY,1961; an MAin Biology from Hunter College, New York, NY, 1968; and School Administration Certification from Columbia University, 1976. She was awarded numerous National Science Foundation Grants.
Sister Bridget ministries included St. Rose of Lima School, NYC (1952-1953,1961-1962); St. Mary School, Fulton, NY (1953 -1961); Cathedral High School, NYC (1962-1973); principal at St. Agnes School, Sparkill, NY (1973-1977); assistant principal/teacher at St. Martin of Tours School, Bronx, NY (1977-1982); assistant principal/teacher at Aquinas High School Bronx, NY (1982-1986); St. Jean Baptiste High School, NYC (1986-1989). From 1989-1995, Sister Bridget served as Assistant to the Director of Incarnation Children’s Center, and as Director of Quality of Life from 1995 until 2002. The Incarnation Children’s Center provides medical assistance to infants, children and adolescents with AIDS. She was a beloved volunteer at Aquinas HS, Bronx, NY from 2001-2014 and then retired to Dominican Convent, participating in the life and spirit of the Community in volunteer service.
Sister Bridget is predeceased by her parents James and Margaret and her brothers, Msgr. Joseph Kiniry, James Kiniry, Bro. Richard Kiniry, CSC, and sisters, Marianne Kiniry, Margaret Rafferty and Patricia Krill. She is survived by her brothers, Michael Kiniry, Msgr. Lawrence Kiniry, and Thomas Kiniry, and beloved nieces, nephews, and grandnieces/nephews, Dominican Sisters, Associates, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill, NY on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 11:30AM a.m. Visitation is Friday, June 7, 2024 from 9:30 to 10:30am at Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY. Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Arrangements are by Higgins Funeral Home.
