Sr. Carolyn Bell

Sister Carolyn Bell of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on February 8, 2020 in Siena Hall. She was 89 years old. Born in Jennings, MO on November 15, 1930 Loretta Carolynwas the daughter of Harold and Loretta Karcher Bell. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1949 and received the name Sister Mary Carolyn. She professed her first vows in 1951 and final vows in 1956.
Sister Carolyn received a BS in Education from Webster College, St Louis, MO, 1959; she attended St. Louis University for Religious Studies,1974; and earned CPE units from St. Mary’s Health Center.
Sister Carolyn ministered at Cardinal McCloskey Home and School, White Plains, NY (1951-1952); in St. Louis, MO at St. James (1952-1957,1966-1968, 1970-1975); LittleFlower (1957-1966); and Holy Redeemer (1969-1970). From 1968-1969, Sr. Carolyn taught at St. Catherine, Binghamton, NY. From 1975-2002, Sister Carolyn served in pastoral ministry in St. Louis, MO: Maria Fonte Monastery (1975-1976); St. Mark (1976-1978);St. Joseph Hospital (1978-1979); St. Louis State Hospital (1979-1980); St. Joseph Hospital (1980-1987); Apartment Community, Belleville, IL (1987-1991); DePaul Health Center (1991-1997); St. John Mercy Medical Center (1997-2002).
Sister Carolyn was predeceased by her parents Harold and Loretta Karcher Bell, her sister Mary, her nephew Rich and niece Cindy. She is survived by her brothersJoseph (Marilyn), Alexis (Helen - deceased), her sister Patricia Kelley and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill, NY, on Thursday February 13, 2020 at 10:30a.m. Visitation is on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Arrangements are by Higgins Funeral Home.
