Although Steven “Mohawk” McChesney often described himself as “that weird mechanic who drinks a lot, can fix anything, is very nice and very generous, but doesn’t put up with anything,” he was so much more than that.
The OG of bad dad jokes and wonderfully inappropriate humor, Steve used laughter as a way to connect with people. Beneath the jokes was a man of remarkable intelligence and complexity—often the smartest person in the room, although this would not always be apparent at first sight. When something captured his interest, Steve dove in completely, researching it endlessly and collecting everything related to it along the way.
Steve appreciated life’s contrasts. He loved dive bars and top-shelf bourbon, craft IPAs and designer colognes, scented soaps and well-worn Carhartt pants. He had little use for suits, yet somehow owned a tie for every holiday and occasion.
An avid collector of all things Snap-on, Steve amassed an impressive collection of tools and memorabilia. His passion for automobiles was equally legendary. Over the years, he has purchased numerous cars which, true to form for a mechanic, were often in various stages of repair or restoration, patiently awaiting in his yard for attention in his workshop. In his younger years, Steve raced his BMW on tracks across the country, earning trophies and plaques that reflected both his skill and determination.
His career as a Field Service Engineer took him far beyond his home, carrying him across the United States and around the world, from Russia to Japan and many places in between. While he was highly respected for his technical expertise, it was the people he met along the way who left the greatest impression on him. Steve loved getting to know his local coworkers, learning about their cultures, and sharing in their traditional meals and drinks. Wherever his work took him, he found common ground through conversation, laughter, and a genuine appreciation for the people around him.
In recent years, Steve became known for carrying and handing out tiny ducks wherever he went. Friends, family, coworkers, and even strangers would often find themselves the unexpected recipients of his little ducks. When asked why he did it, Steve's answer was always simple: “Because it makes people happy.” He would remind people that they needed more than one “so that you can keep your Ducks in a row” It was a small gesture, but one that often had a great effect on others.
Above all else, Steve was most proud of his two sons and the fine young men they have become—despite, as he would jokingly say, his best efforts. They were his greatest accomplishment and his deepest source of pride.
Steve “Mohawk” McChesney is survived by his wife Grainne, his sons Sebastian and Slade, his father Donald and his wife Addie.
