

Susan Jean O’Hanlon (nee Spillane), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, sister and educator, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025, at the age of 78. She was born April 29, 1946, and was a longtime resident of our New City community.
Susan was the cherished wife of Denis T. O’Hanlon. They shared 56 years of marriage together. They built a loving home and raised four children: Erin (Gerry) Sullivan, Colleen (Michael) Doria, Alanna (Christopher) Otton and Denis (Catherine) O’Hanlon. She was also a proud and devoted grandmother to 11 grandchildren who lovingly called her Suzie: Gerry, Sean, Kevin, Caroline, Marykate, Teagan, Charlie, Christopher, Denis, Killian and Rory; each of whom brought her endless joy and pride. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph A. Spillane and her mother, Marion J. Spillane (nee Dowling). Susan is survived by Joseph (Patricia) Spillane, Robert (Carol) Spillane, Kevin (Mary Jane) Spillane, Marianne (Peter) Stuebe and Michael (Joan) Spillane, who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
A passionate and dedicated educator, she obtained her undergraduate and masters degrees from Hunter College, she began her teaching career for the New York City Department of Education. After taking time off to raise her family, she returned to her true calling in 1994 becoming a Teacher of the Visually Impaired for Orange Ulster BOCES. She served in that role with compassion and commitment until her retirement in 2011. Her impact on the students she worked with was immeasurable, and her legacy as an advocate for children with special needs will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Her wake will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 from 2-5pm and 7-9pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine’s Church in New City on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 10:00am. Following the funeral, she will be laid to rest at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, in Hawthorne, where she will join many loved ones who have gone before her.
Susan’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all of her students. She will forever be remembered for the love, wisdom, and care she shared throughout her life.
Rest in peace, Susan. Your legacy of love and dedication will continue to shine.
