Thomas J. Carroll (Tom) of New City, NY passed away on July 16, 2018, at the age of 84. Tom was born in the Bronx, to Irish immigrants Elizabeth Whelan and Thomas Carroll, and was the fourth of five children. Tom grew up in Long Beach, NY, which fostered a life-long affinity for the beach. He proudly served his country in Korea after high school, as part of the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. After military service, he worked for Otis Elevators before joining the family restaurant business started by his late father. Tom owned and operated a number of Irish-themed restaurants in Manhattan and Long Beach, many under the "Carroll" family brand. Following his retirement as a small business owner in the mid-1980's, he worked for Local 817 of the Theatrical Teamsters Union in New York City.
Tom married Joan Stewart on May 24, 1958, to whom he was married for 60 years until his passing. They lived in Jackson Heights, Queens, before settling in New City, NY in 1974 where they continued to raise their five children. Tom and Joan enjoyed travelling together, often going on cruises or taking trips to see Johnny Mathis. In recent years they spent the winter months in Naples, Florida. Tom was a member of the West Nyack II Seniors Club, St. Augustine Parish and the VFW, and he looked forward to morning coffee with his many friends at Goldberg's in New City. He was an avid sports fan, having tried out once for the NY Giants baseball team at the Polo Grounds. His love of sports extended to his children and grandchildren, leading him to coach several teams and attend many games over the years.
Apart from his loving wife, Tom is survived by his devoted children: daughter Kathleen (Nick), son Thomas (Linda), son Timothy (Linda), son William (Susan), son Robert (Lauren); and by his adoring grandchildren: William, Thomas, Brittany, Shaelyn, Griffin, Timothy, Samantha, Kristine and Juliana. He is also survived by his brother William Carroll and his sister Maureen (Bob) Luca. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his sister Ann (Bill) Egan.
Tom Carroll left a memorable impression on those he met; he was loved by his family and friends; and he will be missed by many.
Visitation will be held Friday, July 20th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, 321 South Main St., New City, NY 10956. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 21st at 10:00 am at St. Augustine's Church, 140 Maple Ave, New City, NY 10956.
