So sorry to hear of Mr Shumways passing.  I trained under him as a child. I won many tournaments we as a school attended. I still have the trophies. He was a nice man who was always nice to me. He actually took me and other students to compete in two national championships in Detroit and San Francisco.  Still thinking of him after so many years. Rest in peace SENSEI. I’m sorry to hear of the passing of Shumway Sensei.  I trained Judo in New City in 1973 and the impression he made upon me is with me to this day.  It was his style of teaching that led me to further train martial arts.

  As an adult I began training Aikido but ultimately ended up studying Daito Ryu Aikijujtsu, Shotokan Karate and Judo earning a Shihan rank in Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu.  I mention this because I firmly believe it was the influence of Shumway Sensei that inspired me to learn martial arts and to teach what I learned to others.  I reference him often when I teach.

With deep regret, I didn't know Shumway Sensei had passed away; I started judo with him in New City in 1966 at age 14.  He was a wonderful teacher and inspirational man: he always treated me with great support, respect and encouragement. His wife Julie was also very kind and supportive of me and all the students. He was so influential in my interest in martial arts, that I eventually went to Japan to train in Aikido, and when I returned as a Shodan he allowed me to teach Aikido at New City Judo Center.  Thereafter I moved to California. To this day I remember him with great fondness, respect and wish I could have seen him more.
By the way: he was also a great ice-skater!

I studied judo under Walter Schumway..He was thee best Sensei   To have …

I learned this Olympic Sport and the self defense Side from MY CHILD hood sensei..

Walter, was tuff man, a tuff sensei, he was strict and it payed off in my life for me..

I remember the placks,he had up in New City Judo..He made me remember them word for word ..

He taught me kodokan traditional Judo..

TILL this very Day I teach the exact way sensei Schumway had taught me from white to black belt ..

I have all the techniques from inside my head and written down ..

And this is how I continue to teach my 20 judokas I have currently..

I use to teach in NEW YORK,My wife and i we now live in FLORIDA ..

This is we’re I teach my Judo now in florida..

Walter will always be my sensei, I miss him so much ..I will never forget you my true and only one true sensei Walter Schumway..

My deepest sympathies to you and your family.  Mr. Shumway, “Sensei” made a lasting impression on me as a teenager.  I had great respect for him, and it was a privilege to learn from him.  I will always be grateful.
