Dearest Evie, Thank you for the love, laughter, and sunshine that you shared with us since our lives first touched more than 35 years ago.  Our children were so blessed to have their "Grandpa Norm and Evie." You were such fun grandparents, and we made the most of those summer months while you were here in Minnesota.  I learned from you how to be more joyful, especially with children, how to be 100% present, interactive, and engaged.
You sure knew how to show excitement for any small victory in a card game with the kids, which started in preschool, and continued.  You have always been a real cheerleader for all of us.  Beth shared with me recently how she could often hear your happy encouragement in the crowd during athletic or dance performances over the years.  And, of course, you sure knew how to show appreciation for your favorite food–-fish! Are there any walleye sandwiches in heaven?    
Of course, you could also be stubborn!  I’m so grateful that you finally agreed to get hearing aids, so the fun conversations and laughter could continue while playing so many card games with you and Norm, and the whole Hammer family.  Oh, the laughter, with you and Grandpa Norm.  Thank you for the laughter.
Even though you have lived through some really hard knocks, especially with losing your mom as a young girl, your resilience and sense of humor have shined through, and you have created beauty around you. 
Thank you, Evie, for your encouragement to believe in dreams and “just do it.”  This gives me courage now and makes me smile. 
Many years ago, when the kids were swinging, you would sing a song to us, and with us, to all our hearts’ content:  “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay.  My, oh my, what a wonderful day.”  I promise to teach my grandchildren this song and to tell them about you.
I will treasure our time together forever. You will be so dearly missed.   May you enjoy God’s loving embrace for all eternity.  Thank you for the joy you brought to our lives.  We love you.
