Mabel Evelyn Peterson, 94, of Garden City Park, NY, (formerly of Queens Village, Canarsie and Long Beach, NY) passed away April 5, 2016 at home with her family in attendance from pancreatic cancer. Beloved wife of her late husband Henry John Peterson; daughter of Mabel Elmira Ramsey and James Archibald Kenney; sister Eleanor Lake and brother-in-law George Lake and is survived by her daughter June Ellen Bonsall, son John Henry Peterson; grandchildren Jennifer Ellissa Bonsall, Robert Neal Bonsall III and his wife Leigh Anderson; and numerous Peterson and Currie family members
Mabel had a positive impact on people she met and never left anyone feeling they were a stranger. Her husband worshiped her. His nickname for her was "Pot," left over from her early years as a mothers' helper in Jamaica, NY. Her son, John, remembers how she lit up a room every time she entered, like a ray of sunshine. "As her son, I assured her when the times got bad that my father would be there to greet her at the time of arrival in heaven. At the time of her demise, I observed a deep seated smile on her face, one difficult to fathom or understand, and one that was characterized of feeling. Her smile left no doubt in my mind that she had reached heaven and my father most certainly was there for her." Her daughter, June, will be forever grateful for the feelings of independence and self-worth she installed in her at a very young age. Her granddaughter, Jennifer, inherited her love of music and her melodic voice. Her grandson, Robert, received her empathy for people, reflected in her soft demeanor along with her quick wit.
We can all reflect positively on her memory and the positive impact she had in this life as she joins her husband, Henry, the "Lid" to his "Pot" in the next phase of their existence.
Mabel suffered from macular degeneration for many years. In lieu of flowers, family members would appreciate memorial contributions be made to The Helen Keller Institute.
