It is with heavy hearts and deep love that the Harrington family announces the passing of Barbara Sylvester Harrington, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Camelot of Broussard. She was 83 years old. Barbara was born February 16, 1943, in Opelousas, Louisiana.
A devoted educator, Barbara dedicated 35 years of service to the Iberia Parish School System, spending much of her career teaching at Pesson Elementary School. Throughout those years, she touched the lives of countless children, guiding and encouraging them as they grew into successful adults. Teaching was more than a profession to Barbara—it was her calling, and she took great pride in the lasting impact she made on her students and their families.
Never one to remain idle, Barbara embraced a new chapter following her retirement from education. She joined Stage Department Store in New Iberia as a sales associate, where her warm personality and strong work ethic quickly earned her recognition as one of the store’s top sellers.
Outside of her work, Barbara found joy in many hobbies and interests. She and her beloved husband, Bob, were active members of the New Iberia Hoe Downers, a local square-dancing group that met regularly for fellowship and performed choreographed dances throughout the community. She also enjoyed traveling, visiting casinos—fondly referred to as the “Casina”—and spending time with family and friends.
Barbara’s adventurous spirit carried her across the United States and around the world. Her travels took her to Canada, Europe, Japan, Russia, and many other destinations. One family favorite story recalls her determined pursuit of a souvenir pin from a Russian soldier’s uniform—a keepsake she successfully obtained through persistence and charm. During her travels, she also met actors Robert Redford and Della Reese, both of whom she fondly remembered as gracious and kind.
A talented seamstress, Barbara found great happiness in creating beautiful handmade treasures for her family. She lovingly crafted clothing, bows, bibs, blankets, and other cherished keepsakes that will remain treasured reminders of her love for generations to come.
Above all, Barbara’s greatest joy was her family. Her unwavering love, generous heart, and steadfast faith shaped the lives of those she held dear. While her family mourns her passing, they find comfort in knowing she is reunited with loved ones who have gone before her and resting peacefully in the presence of her Lord.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Sabrina Delcambre (Scott), Gina Gachassin (Roger, Jr.), and Holly Savoy (Spence); nine grandchildren, Michael Delcambre (Ade), Jason Delcambre (Amber), Michelle Delcambre, Emily Martinez (Michael), Jenna Reyes (Josh), Ryan Gachassin, Blair Bird (Aaron), Elaine McPherson (Slade), and Lauren Savoy; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brother, Wiley Sylvester; her godchildren, Vicki Passman (Cole) and Judy Sebastian; her nephew, Guy Sylvester (Joy); her cousin, Yvonne Normand; and her dear friend, Sherry Musumeche.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert “Bob” Harrington; her granddaughter, Kristi Delcambre; her mother, Olive Sylvester; her great-grandmother, Emily Soileau Joubert; and her aunt, Louella Lognion.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Barbara’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in New Iberia. Fr. Keith Landry will serve as celebrant. Following the Mass, Barbara will be laid to rest beside her husband at Holy Family Cemetery.
