NEW IBERIA – Funeral Services and a Celebration of Life will be held for Charlene “Cherie” Louise Currie Greer at Noon on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in New Iberia, LA with Pastor Scott Bullock officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home Saturday, May 4th from 9:00 am until time of service at 12 noon.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Cherie loved and lived life to the fullest! She never met a stranger and always had a bright beautiful smile for everyone. Cherie was gifted by God with a great passion for music and an incredible singing voice, having enjoyed a few years of entertaining in the music industry as a member of the Lawrence Welk Show chorus and singing in Las Vegas, NV and Palm Springs, CA before meeting and falling in love with her beloved husband of 54 years, Bill. Together Cherie and Bill shared a beautiful life, having lived in San Mateo, CA then moving to Covington, LA and ultimately moving to New Iberia, LA and making it their home for 50 years. Cherie was a remedial reading teacher with the Iberia Parish ESEA Title 1 Reading program in the 1960’s and 1970’s, a radio advertising account executive with KDEA/KNIR and KANE Radio Stations in the 1970’s and 1980’s, and a deputy with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Department in the 1990’s and through the turn of the century, dealing with Social Service Concerns for the department as well as representing the Department in Elderly Citizens Services, until the time of her retirement.
Cherie is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Dr. William E. “Bill” Greer of New Iberia; their one and only child, daughter Shelley Greer Hebert and husband, Paul R. Hebert of New Iberia; 3 grandchildren – Currie W. P. Rankin and wife, Missy and Davis K. T. Rankin and wife, Megan all of New Iberia, and Shanie E. G. Rankin and fiancé’, Joshua Farnsworth of Lafayette, LA along with 5 “Bonus” grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 2 “Bonus” great grandchildren. Cherie is also survived by her broth-in-law, Col. George D. Greer of Avondale Estates, GA and sister-in-law, Anne G. Townsend of Mt. Holly, NJ; 2 nephews; and 6 nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth G. Currie and James “Jim” Currie; her sister, Betty J. Mazzari and her husband, Ernest “Ernie” Mazzari; mother and father-in-law, Alma Davis Greer and Frank H. Greer; sister-in-law, Mary D. Greer; brother-in-law, John Townsend; and numerous aunts and uncles.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ditch, Dr. Stokes, Dr. O’Brien and the wonderful staff at Iberia Extended Care/IMC for their loving care of Cherie throughout her illness.
