NEW IBERIA – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Dallas Paul Braus, age 92, at 11:00 am Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. Fr. A. Arockiam will be the celebrant. Mr. Braus will be laid to rest next to his wife in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Mausoleum.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home on Monday from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm, with the Rosary being prayed at 7:00 pm. The funeral home will reopen on Tuesday from 8:00 am until 10:30 am.

Mr. Braus was born December 15, 1921 in Wright, LA to the late Emile Braus and Ameliza Bourque Braus, and was one of seven children. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at his residence with his family at his side.

Dallas was proud to have served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II, though he rarely spoke of his service. Other soldiers who served with him remembered Mr. Braus as a war hero participating in the Allied invasion at Anzio, Italy; his ability to speak Cajun French saved his entire unit by allowing them to communicate with resistance fighters in France. When his unit was overrun and imprisoned in by German forces in Rhineland, he and a fellow soldier escaped and were later brought to freedom by the Allied Russians. He received two Purple Hearts during his 11 months in battle.

Most will remember Dallas as an expert floor installer. He worked with such companies as Ralph’s, Oubre’s, Nero’s, and Amy’s as well as with his own business, B&B Flooring. Outside of his work, he was a member of the VFW post in Youngsville and the American Legion in Erath, and the Council on Aging. He enjoyed playing bingo with the council, gardening, raising cattle in his younger days, and most importantly spending time with his family. He leaves behind many fond memories that will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his daughters, Patsy Cathey and Nancy Hebert and husband Johnny; his sons, Rickey Braus and companion Lillian, and Charles Braus and wife Sarah; daughter-in-law, Betty Braus; 13 grandchildren, Keith Daily and Scott Braus (whom he raised as his own children), Jackie Cathey, Anika Cathey, Cylest C. Polk, Andy Hebert, Amy Sarrazin, Ann Hebert, Ashley Langlinais, Mellissa Braus, Catrina Broussard, Ryan Braus, and Chuckie Braus; 34 great grandchildren; and 28 great great grandchildren.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lauris “Poon” Touchet Braus; a son, Michael Braus; great granddaughters, Elizabeth Sarrazin and Lisa Broussard; son-in-law, Kenneth Cathey; and his brothers, Ellis, Armogene, Henry, Elus, Lercy and Emile, Jr.

Serving as pallbearers will be Rickey, Scott, Ryan, Chuckie, and Wayne Braus, as well as Keith Daily and Andy Hebert. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Hebert, James Braus, and Brent Romero.

Memorial contributions may be made in Dallas’ name to Heart of Hospice, 201 W. Vermilion St., Lafayette, LA 70501.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
