

NEW IBERIA – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mrs. Elise Babineaux Gonsoulin, age 92, at 2:00 pm Monday, March 21, 2011 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Fr. Mark Derise will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Scriptures will be read by her granddaughters, Rochelle Chapman and Angela Dugas, with gifts being presented by her grandchildren. Greig Robichaux and Monique Derouen will serve as Eucharistic Ministers. The eulogy will be delivered by her son, Ronald Gonsoulin.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home of New Iberia on Sunday, March 20, 201 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, with the rosary at 6:30 pm. The funeral home will reopen on Monday from 8:00 am until time of services.
Mrs. Gonsoulin passed peacefully at her residence at 7:37 pm on Thursday, March 17, 2011 with her loving family at her side.
Elise was a lifelong resident of New Iberia. She was born on February 8, 1919 to parents, Simon Babineaux and Alice Lopez Babineaux. She devoted her life to taking care of others. She dearly enjoyed baking, sewing, and fishing. She was an avid orchid grower sharing her plants and skills with many. She was a member of the St. Anne’s Altar Society, Charlotte Home Demonstration Club, and Iberia Parish Farm Bureau Women’s Committee. She also taught religion classes and sang with the church choir. She and her husband, Ulysse, love to go fishing and enjoyed many trips trolling for shrimp.
Survivors include her children, Kathleen Armentor and husband Billy, Caroline Reaux and husband Glynn, Ronald Gonsoulin and wife Cheryl, Robert Gonsoulin and wife Theresa, and Felix Gonsoulin and wife Melanie; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; sisters, Lena Delcambre and Isabelle Romero; and brother, Chester Babineaux.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ulysse A. Gonsoulin, Jr.; parents, Simon and Alice Babineaux; brothers, Harry, Willie, George, Freddie, and John D. Babineaux; and grandsons, W. Anthony Armentor and Rodney T. Gonsoulin.
Pallbearers will be Keven Gonsoulin, William R. Armentor, Dean Courville, Dwayne Dugas, Kevin Chapman, and Greig Robichaux. Honorary pallbearers are Chester Babineaux, Clara Kleinpeter and Claude Duet.
The family wishes to thank Fr. Mark Derise and Fr. Jude Thierry for their spiritual support. A special thanks to the caregivers for their special care of our mother.
