Elizabeth (Libby) and her husband James moved from New Iberia, LA in 1978 to Homosassa, Florida upon her husband’s retirement from his 30+ years as Superintendent of the New Iberia Parks and Recreation Dept. While her husband worked as a fishing guide on the Homosassa River, Elizabeth extended her teaching career in Iberia Parish to Citrus County Florida until her retirement following a long career primarily teaching kindergarten. Elizabeth graduated from USL (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and then in 1976 earned a Master’s Degree in Education from USL while also taking classes at LSU. While in New Iberia, Libby started the Church of the Epiphany pre-k and kindergarten program which would later evolve to become the Epiphany Day School that continues to operate today. One of Libby’s hobbies was creating “blue print ready” home designs that resulted in homes she lived in in New Iberia and Mandeville, LA. Libby enjoyed sharing her love of the outdoors with her granddaughter Addie through biking, hiking, camping, boating and fishing. Libby was very proud of her sons James who retired from the Red Cross after 28 years of service to then go on to lead a non-profit senior transportation program and Tom whose career includes working for the National Park Service and now the US Forestry Dept. in which he is often called upon to deploy to support major forest fire operations across the country. Her daughter-in-law Phyllis, who with a Doctorate in Education, has worked in the college setting (University of Central Florida) and with the local school district in Summerville, SC and her granddaughter Addie is a graduate of Converse College having earned a degree in math, a recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award and is currently enrolled in college studies to become a registered nurse. Libby’s love of animals has carried forward to her family who like her has a long history of providing homes to a variety of homeless two and four and no-legged creatures from cats to dogs to parrots to gold fish to horses. Libby (Grandmama) will be missed dearly by her family and friends but her legacy will live on forever.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Save the Manatee Club” at savethemanatee.org, or any local no-kill animal shelter.
