Hugh "Don" Donald Carmichael

It is with heavy hearts and deep love that the Carmichael family announces the passing of Hugh Donald "Don" Carmichael, our beloved patriarch and the rock of our family. Don passed away peacefully on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Amelia Manor in Lafayette. Don was born on December 19, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, one of three children born to the late Hugh Day Carmichael and the late Eleanor Paulucci Carmichael.

A proud patriot, Don faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and began his career with the railroad as an apprentice mechanic working on steam and diesel engines. The skills and knowledge he gained there paved the way for a successful career in the oilfield with Teledyne Movable Offshore, where he worked as a diesel mechanic before advancing to the position of barge supervisor.

At the age of 55, Don retired from the oilfield and embraced a new chapter in life. Blessed with remarkable talent and a strong work ethic, he began offering handyman services throughout the New Iberia area. Whether it involved woodworking, carpentry, or mechanical repairs, Don took great pride in helping others and ensuring every job was completed with care and excellence.

Outside of his professional life, Don devoted himself to his faith, his family, and his many crafts. He was a longtime, faithful parishioner of St. Peter's Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and generously volunteered his time in the Adoration Chapel. In recognition of his unwavering dedication and service, he was honored as Parishioner of the Year by his St. Peter's church family, an accomplishment that meant a great deal to him.

Even in his leisure time, Don was happiest in his workshop, where he could be found building, repairing, and perfecting his woodworking projects. His hands were rarely still, and he found joy in creating things that would last for generations.

More than anything, Don treasured his family. His son fondly recalls the countless meals they shared together and the love that filled every gathering. Don was famous for preparing hearty breakfasts, complete with homemade pancakes and the freshest pot of coffee. Anyone fortunate enough to sit at his table always left with a full stomach, a warm heart, and a smile.

Although his presence will be deeply missed, Don leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, generosity, and unconditional love. His family will forever cherish the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the example he set. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Those left to cherish Don's memory are his son, Hugh Day Carmichael and wife, Angelic Hebert Carmichael; his grandchildren, Matthew Hebert, Shane Segura, and Heather Sloan; and his great-granddaughter, Madelyn Haven.

Along with his parents, Don was welcomed into eternal rest by his beloved wife, Jackie Rae Dorsey Carmichael; his children, Timothy Carmichael, Steven Carmichael, and Brenda Sloan; and his siblings, Jean Carmichael Park and Douglas Henry Carmichael.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Don at 10:00 am Saturday, August 15, 2026 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with the Very Reverend William C. Blanda V.F. as celebrant. Following the mass, Don will be laid to rest at Holy Family Mausoleum.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday from 8:00 am until time of mass.
