Born on October 14, 1930, to the late Marshall Conrad Herbert, Sr. and Lillie Lee Herbert. Jerome lived a long and meaningful life marked by service, hard work, and devotion to family. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict. During his time in the military, he distinguished himself not only in his duties but also through his athletic talents, excelling in both boxing and basketball.
Following his military service, Jerome built a dedicated career in the oilfield industry, where he worked for many years as a crane operator and maintenance supervisor. His strong work ethic and reliability earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Jerome was a faithful member of Our Savior’s Church in Broussard, where he found community and spiritual strength. In his leisure time, he enjoyed watching sports on television, a simple pleasure that brought him much happiness.
Above all, Jerome will be remembered for his deep love for his family. He was cherished as a wonderful uncle and godfather, roles he embraced with pride, kindness, and unwavering support.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his nephew and godchild, Marshall Hebert; children, Winnie Fontenette Richard (James); Richard Fontenette (Sandra); Willie Fontenette (Delores); Phil Fontenette (Linda); Jeannie Fontenette Hunter (Vit); Jerry Fontenette (Gwen) and Leroy Fontenette (Myrtle); numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ella Fontenette; one daughter, Martha Fontenette Bogan and five brothers, James Meder, Johnny Herbert, John Herbert, Willie Herbert and Marshall Conrad Hebert, Jr.
Military Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 11:00 am at Beard Cemetery in Erath. Services will be conducted by the Acadiana Veteran’s Honor Guard.
