It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, and friend, Lauren Hebert Salkowitz, age 70, who left us peacefully on Monday, March 17, 2025, just three months after the death of her cherished husband of 52 years, Edward John Salkowitz, Jr.
Lauren was born on March 15, 1954, in New Iberia, LA to the late Roy A. and Lillian Frederick Hebert.
Lauren was a woman of immense love, warmth, and grace. Her life was filled with a deep passion for knowledge, which led her to a long and fulfilling career as a librarian. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Lauren spent many years serving the community at both the Lydia Branch and the New Iberia Branch libraries, sharing her love of reading with countless people. She had a special fondness for science fiction books, often immersing herself in other worlds through the pages of a good book.
Beyond her love for books, Lauren had a deep appreciation for photography. She and her husband enjoyed countless trips to state parks, capturing the beauty of nature and wildlife with their cameras. Her love for photography reflected her ability to see the beauty in the simplest moments of life.
A woman of great spirit and vitality, Lauren was also an avid dancer. Together with her husband, they were known for their incredible dance moves, especially when it came to swamp pop. Their passion for music and dance led them to follow their favorite artists, such as TK Hulin and G.G. Shinn, wherever they could to enjoy the sounds that brought them so much joy. Their love of dancing was a beautiful expression of their love for each other, and their children fondly recall the many compliments they received about how wonderfully their parents danced together.
Lauren will be remembered for her generous heart, her unwavering dedication to her family, and her ability to light up a room with her presence. She was a loving mother to her children, a devoted sister, and a cherished friend to many. Though her time with us was cut short, her legacy of love, joy, and passion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her children, Jason Salkowitz and Daliela Salkowitz and Joey Dore’ and three brothers, Gregory Hebert and wife Patsy; Wade Hebert and wife Sable and Rodney Hebert and wife Faye.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Tanna Salkowitz Romero.
A memorial service will be held privately at a later date.
