August 31, 1940 – June 1, 2025
It is with great sorrow that the Gachassin, Labit, and Verret families announce the passing of Mary Ann Verret Gachassin, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and dear friend to many. With her family by her side, Mary Ann gently departed this earthly life and entered her eternal glory on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the age of 84.
Mary Ann was born on August 31, 1940, in rural St. Martin Parish to the late Albert Verret and the late Edmae Sonnier Verret. One of five siblings, she was raised in a close-knit Cajun family that instilled in her a deep-rooted sense of kindness, generosity, and love for tradition—values she carried with her throughout her life.
Early in her working years, Mary Ann held positions at Hobart and Evangeline Coca-Cola. But her greatest joy and fulfillment came from her role as a wife and mother. She cherished every moment spent with family—especially spoiling her grandchildren—and found her greatest happiness in the simple joys of home. Her kitchen was the heart of many gatherings, where she lovingly prepared her signature dishes, including her famous potato hash and white bean soup. Her home was also adorned with her beloved birds. Mary Ann had a passion for raising birds, including Macaws, cockatiels and parrots, to name a few.
Mary Ann and her beloved husband, Ricky, shared a beautiful journey together over their 42 years of marriage. Their love of life took them on adventures, including camping trips with friends and memorable visits to California to spend time with family. A true Cajun at heart, Mary Ann found joy in the lively sounds of Cajun music, which filled her home daily—whether she was cleaning, cooking, or simply enjoying time with loved ones.
She also had a fondness for old westerns and classic action films, especially those featuring her favorite stars, Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris. Her love for storytelling, music, and tradition made her home a place of warmth and comfort for all who entered.
Above all, Mary Ann’s heart belonged to her family. Her legacy is one of boundless love, unwavering compassion, and a quiet strength that touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Ricky Gachassin, Sr.; her children, Ricky Verret (Linda), Fran Romero Randazzo, Joseph Romero, Robert Labit, Sr. (Susan), James R. Gachassin, Jr. (Sherry), and Nola Mae Gachassin; her cherished grandchildren, Jeremy Randazzo, Monica Romero, Becca Barattini, Katherine Adams, Dustin Labit, Robert Labit, Jr., Abigail Labit, Tyler Gachassin, Kelsey Gachassin, Kayley Gachassin, Justice Watson, Cain Watson, and Lee Frederick; 13 great-grandchildren; her brother, Larry Verret (Evelina); and her faithful fur baby, Honey.
She is now reunited in eternal peace with her parents; her sons, Byron Labit and Shannon Labit; her siblings, Oswald "Red" Verret, Lloyd "Johnny" Verret, and Wyva Verret Delahoussaye; and her in-laws, Voorhies Gachassin and Mabel Landry Gachassin.
A funeral service to celebrate Mary Ann’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Evangeline Funeral Home in New Iberia, with Pastor Geran Maples officiating. She will be laid to rest at Holy Family Mausoleum.
